Introduction

SRS Logo
The Substance Registry System (SRS) is the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) central system for information about regulated and monitored substances. The system provides a common basis for identification of chemicals, biological organisms, and other substances listed in EPA regulations and data systems, as well as substances of interest from other sources, such as publications. The SRS supports and conforms to EPA's Chemical Identification Data Standard and the EPA's Biological Identification Data Standard. The SRS is a part of the centralized Systems of Registries (SoR), which provides access to the Agency's core registry systems.

Who might find information of interest in the SRS?

The SRS is available to anyone interested in chemical and biological information, including the public, environmental decision makers, regulated entities, state and local environmental agencies, regulation writers, and computer system developers and managers. For instance, the SRS can help information system managers comply with the Agency chemical and biological identification data standards by providing the needed technical information, including chemical identification numbers and names. A system developer can download text files from the SRS for populating permissible value lists in an information system. The SRS can also help environmental information users find where a substance is regulated if they know the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CASRN), name, or even a synonym.

The data can also be accessed using the Environmental Data Registry (EDR) Portal, a search engine that enables users to search metadata registry content using a URL with integrated search capabilities. It enables users to search and seamlessly navigate to detail pages meeting the search criteria. An Environmental Metadata Gateway Search has been developed so system developers can build URLs that automatically query various substance data and display the appropriate detail information from the Substance Registry System (SRS).

What does the SRS contain?

Number of substances currently in the SRS: 99027
Number of submitting organizations represented in the SRS: 0
Number of information resources included in the SRS: 115

The SRS contains substance identification information and listings of substances in regulations and Agency programs. Using the SRS Search, you can search for substances by common identifiers such as Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CASRN) and name (systematic or scientific). Each substance is linked to regulations in which it is referenced and program systems where it has been reported. Searches can also be done by specific regulation or program system.

What is the future of the SRS?

The data in the SRS is periodically updated with new regulations and program system lists. Future plans include expanded reference information for regulations and an improved user interface. Other enhancements may include adding identification information and linking to other information resources such as toxicology and health information. If you would like to suggest additional data to be included or make other comments, please use the contact us form.

Please read the SoR Disclaimer for the Substance Registry System.
