Abstract: Databases holding millions of records and gigabytes to terabytes of data are now common. Researchers try to organize data that are needed to address complex issues. A database management system (DBMS) can provide a formal, highly structured way to organize data. First, a schema, or model, of how the data can be represented must be built. Like all models, it is never perfect, but it allows for more efficient, orderly and accurate data processing. It is an artificial representation of the real world, into which data must be made to fit. The larger the database, the more crucial database design becomes.
