Tebufenozide is an insecticide, targeting lepidopteran species, specifically the gypsy moth.  Tebufenozide is used on forestry, ornamentals, and a variety of crops including grapes, berries, and tuberous and corm vegetables (except potatoes). There are no residential uses.  Approximately 150,000 pounds of tebufenozide is applied annually in the U.S. [1814].  It mimics the action molting hormones resulting in a lethal unsuccessful molt. [2003]

Its IUPAC name is N-tert-butyl-N'-(4-ethylbenzoyl)-3,5-dimethylbenzohydrazide.  In soil its major metabolite is 4-(N'-(3,5-dimethylbenzoyl-N-(1,1-dimethylethyl)hydrazinocarbonyl) benzoic acid, and minor metabolites are 4-(N'-(3,5-dimethylbenzoyl-N-(1,1-dimethylethyl)hydrazinocarbonyl) phenylacetic acid and N-(1,1-dimetylethyl)-N-(4-acetylbenzoyl)-3,5-dimethylbenzoylhydrazine. [2001]

Tebufenozide is of low acute toxicity, categorized as Toxicity Category IV for acute oral, dermal, and inhalation exposures, and for ocular and dermal irritation. There is no evidence of carcinogenicity for tebufenozide from available mammalian
studies and tebufenozide is classified as “not likely to be carcinogenic to humans.” [1814]  It is hemotoxic with red blood cell damage. [2003]

There are scant occurrence data.  It is not regulated in drinking water, but is on the Contaminant Candidate List 3.
